Whether it's your profile picture, logo, or a stock image, you'll see how to easily add a photo in the Header or Footer section in Word. Watch this video for key tips on how to wrap-text to place the image where you want, then crop it into a circle shape without distorting it. We’ll adjust the custom margins to ensure the cursor starts below the footer image. This will allow you to save the document as a template that you can use as a letterhead, form, report cover, or any type of graphic document.
Step 1: Accessing the Header & Footer
Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.
Place your cursor in the top section of the document.
Double-click to automatically open the Header and Footer. Alternatively, you can go to "Insert," then "Header," and click "Edit Header."
Step 2: Inserting Your Image
Once in the Header and Footer view, navigate to the "Insert" tab.
Click on "Pictures" and select the image you want to include from your device.
Click "Insert" to add the image to your document.
Step 3: Wrapping Text
If an icon pops up next to your selected image, it's the Layout Options icon.
Click on it and choose "In Front of Text." If the icon doesn't appear, right-click the image, go to "Wrap Text," and select "In Front of Text."
Step 4: Resizing and Repositioning the Image
To resize your image, drag its handles. When it's in the desired position, click, hold, and drag to move it.
You can place the image wherever you want in the Header or Footer.
Step 5: Cropping the Image into a Circle
To crop your image into a circle, select it.
Go to the "Picture Format" tab.
Click on "Crop" and then select "Crop to Shape."
Choose the oval shape.
Return to the "Crop" option, click on "Aspect Ratio," and select "1:1" to make it a circle.
Adjust the position of the image within the circle as needed by dragging the selected image with your mouse or using your arrow keys.
Click outside the image area to de-select it.
Step 6: Finishing Up
Double-click outside of the Header and Footer to close it.
If you need to edit the image later, simply double-click to reopen the Header and Footer section.
Bonus Tip: Adjusting Margins
To position your cursor below the image, go to the "Layout" tab.
Click "Margins" and select "Custom Margins."
Increase the top margin to create the desired space, then click OK. Your cursor will now start after the Header Image.
